Here&#8217;s what that actually looks like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A clip of you performing in front of millions of people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A chance to get noticed by bookers or fans<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Credibility if the show has name recognition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Something to post and point to when people ask \u201cWhere have you performed?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That can be enough to move your career forward\u2014<strong>if<\/strong> you use it right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You lose control the second you walk onstage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What they don\u2019t tell you up front:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You don\u2019t own the footage. They do.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You don\u2019t control the edit. They can cut it however they want.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You don\u2019t decide the story. They often cast you as a type: the underdog, the weirdo, the one who cries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re cool with being entertainment, fine. But if you want your act to speak for itself, this isn\u2019t always the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Certain performers can use this as a shortcut<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people really benefit from going on these shows. You might be one of them if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You don\u2019t have a professional clip of your act and want a good one<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019re great live but haven\u2019t figured out how to showcase it online<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019re breaking into a new market (e.g., you\u2019re known locally but want to go national)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ve got a weird or visual act that doesn\u2019t translate well in print or photos<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other performers should probably stay away<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might want to skip it if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You already have a strong portfolio and pro footage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You rely on surprise or mystery\u2014once your act airs, that trick\u2019s burned<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You want full control over how you\u2019re presented<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019re hoping to win (spoiler: you probably won\u2019t)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">These are the real pros and cons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PROS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Free national exposure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fast, high-quality clip<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can boost your bookings short-term<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gives you a story to tell and credibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chance to surprise people who underestimated you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a new logo on your resume<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CONS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You give up control of your act and image<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They can make you look like a joke<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You don\u2019t own the footage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can\u2019t reuse your signature act as easily<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low odds of winning anything<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Winning isn\u2019t the real win<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people who \u201cwin\u201d these shows usually aren\u2019t the ones who go the furthest in real life. Use the show as a tool. Go in with a plan. Know what you want out of it.
